TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is a noninvasive brain stimulation technique. It is primarily used for treating Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
In depressed patients, the electrical activity in certain areas of the brain is shown to be reduced. TMS targeted in these areas, reawakens these cells, increasing brain activity to appropriate levels.
TMS is typically prescribed when antidepressants have failed, or the side effects are intolerable. Antidepressants are systemic, which means that the medication is absorbed into the blood stream. This can cause numerous side effects. TMS is a noninvasive, outpatient procedure with no systemic side effects.
Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS):
• Most used form.
• Repetitive magnetic pulses via a figure-8-shaped coil.
• Stimulates underactive neurons and modulates brain activity.
Theta Burst Stimulation (TBS):
• Newer, faster form using theta burst pattern.
• Short bursts of high-frequency pulses.
• Promising for depression, OCD, and chronic pain.
• Some studies suggest TBS may be more effective than traditional rTMS.
